Things to do in Dharamshala

Himachal Pradesh in India has 2 capital cities – Shimla and Dharamshala. Shimla is the summer capital city and Dharamshala is the winter capital city. So, both cities are popular enough to receive a lot of tourists each year.

Dharamshala has a lot many things to offer. It is the perfect place to have various experiences all at one destination.

Go for a Trek

Karthani valley trek

I am sure, those who have thought about trekking in Himachal Pradesh have heard of the Triund trek and Kareri Lake trek. The Triund trek starts from Dharamshala and is perfect for first-timers. I also went on my first trek from here but only till Karthani Valley, which comes on the way to Triund hilltop. It’s a perfect way to enjoy a trek even with kids.

Try momos at Kripal Momos

Kripal momos in Dharamshala

If you are a huge fan of dumplings and momos, just like me, then your visit to Dharamshala is incomplete if you don’t try it here. Kripal momos have a really tiny space with just 4 tables stacked together with a backside kitchen. They have a very limited menu but definitely try mutton momos. Oh, they were so heavenly.

Go Paragliding

Even though Bir is the hotspot for paragliding, Dharamshala offers quite great views too. Especially for first-timers who might be scared of this experience in terms of height and everything, Dharamshala has a lower altitude with no compromise on views. That’s the main reason I choose to paraglide in Dharamshala for my first time.

Shop at Main Square market in Mcleodganj

Who doesn’t like shopping? Especially when you are on a trip, you want to buy as many souvenirs as possible to help you remember that place. So, when you are in Dharamshala, shopping at Main Square market in Mcleodganj is one of the things that you should definitely check out. But be prepared to walk in the crowd. It is always packed with both tourists and locals.

Visit State War Memorial

State war memorial. Dharamshala

Timings – 8 AM to 8 PM
Entry Fees – INR 20
Located amidst a forest of pine trees, this place honors those who fought for our motherland. The main monument here consists of three pillars of black marble with names of martyrs inscribed on them. Surrounded by lush green forest, it is a very quiet place. Just walk around and pay tribute.

Namgyal Monastery

Timings – 9 AM to 6 PM
Entry Fees – Free
It is also referred to as “Dalai Lama’s Temple” as it is the personal monastery of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso. It is located in the ‘Little Lhasa’ region and requires a bit of trek to reach here. Even though I could not visit this place as it is closed currently due to COVID-19, it was of my top places to visit.

I have been to Dharamshala just once, and I already can’t wait to visit again. Everything I mention here is based on my personal experiences. Might not have added everything as there is a lot more for me to explore.
