My Top 10 Travel tips

Travel is literally the best teacher out there for you in the world. And even though I have not travelled as extensively as you might think, I have learnt a hell lot. Here is a list of my top 10 travel tips about what to carry or prepare beforehand that I felt has helped me out during my travels.

1. Sanitization

Seriously. With COVID-19 trying to stop you from travelling, this is something you cannot compromise with. And even when there is no pandemic, sanitization is altogether a good practice to follow. Always carry a hand sanitizer with you. ALWAYS.

2. Carry your passport and important documents around with you

When you travel international, the passport is one of the most important documents to have with you. And if you happen to lose it somehow, it could be a disaster. So, always and always carry them with you. Also, keep scanned copies of these documents mailed to yourself.

3. Travel adaptor

This is such a lifesaver item. Again, only required when you travel to any international country. If you don’t know what a travel adaptor is, it is a device which you can rearrange in a form to get the input plug same as your charger and the plug to port in the socket would be the one you need to convert to. Okay, I know I could not explain much but trust me. I can guarantee that you will not regret buying this. Just FYI, in India, we have plug type D.

I have been using this travel adapter for past 2 years.

4. Get printouts of your bookings

I know this sounds so old school. But you never know when your phone might “betray” you. Keep hard copies of all types of booking like flight, accommodation, entrance tickets or any kind of activity. I prefer to have the itinerary also printed just so in case.

5. Track your spending

A mandatory task for me and should be for you as well. Keeping a track of your expenses can help you manage your budget and you won’t go mad when at the end you try to match up your spending and end up getting confused. During my desert safari in Dubai, I mistakenly gave a 50 Dirham note instead of 5 Dirham. I was, of course, frustrated but it was a relief to know the mistake that same night rather than at the end of the vacation.

6. Be hydrated

When you travel, you lose sight of how much you drink water. You might indulge in drinks and alcohol, but water is really important to be in good shape. You should carry a bottle at all times with you. This will keep you reminding to drink even if you are not hungry.

I bought this bottle from Chinatown in Singapore and it has been with me all times, even in my office.

7. Try local food

Every state in India has a different culture. And so is the food. Never miss out on a chance to have local food. Whether it’s in a restaurant or street food. Just follow the local crowd and you will be guided to the best food in the town.

8. Always carry cash

There can be many establishments where they might not be accepting any cards at all. Especially if you go out to try street food. Also, it is a good practice to pay for your expenses in cash as it somehow gives you the feeling that yes you have spent. Which, in turn, can help in not spending too much.

9. Download offline maps

If you are travelling to an unknown destination and you have a habit of wandering off on your own, then definitely do this step. Whichever location you will be staying or might plan on exploring, download maps offline. So, even if you do not have internet or somehow you do not have a connection, this will guide you.

10. Portable battery

Ever ran out of battery while you are in the middle of the road trying to figure out your next turn? Or maybe at the airport where you had your tickets on your phone? Yupp! I can feel you there buddy. And this is exactly where having a portable charger comes in handy. Always carry one with you at all times.

Depending on your usage, you can decide how much mAh battery you want to go for. The more the mAh, the more the cost.

Hope this list was something you needed before venturing out on your travel and I have been able to help you out 🙂

  1. these are great tips.
carrying important docs with you at all times is critical and having the printed versions of your bookings is actually good.
    thanks for sharing your knowledge.

  2. I’m an old school traveler too, with printouts! I don’t trust technology all the time. Tech glitch can happen. Due to the pandemic sanitizers and masks are necessary. It is better safe than sorry. Your post sums up the essentials!

  3. Very good tips. Hydration is very important and so many places don’t have good water. Good footwear ranks high for me because I walk so much.

    1. I totally agree Mike. Choosing the right footwear is a top priority if you are the kind of person who loves to walk around a town rather than taking local transport or cab services. That goes for me as well 😉

  4. Some very smart travel tips for all travelers. On our last trip overseas, we downloaded Offline Maps for our destinations and worked great. What an excellent way to navigate without the need for data! 🙂

  5. a portable battery is an absolute must when travelling isn’t it – especially for solo travellers in my opinion, so you can always get in touch with someone if need be x
